Jeu en réalité alternée (Alternate Reality Game)

Présentation des Jeux en réalité alternée

The simplest explanation of Alternate Reality Games (ARG) is that a story is fragmented over multiple locations (both real and virtual) and a community of players then work to piece the story back together.

Clues can be found in a variety of media, including: videos, classified ads, phone calls, audio files, websites, email, real-life locations and good old-fashioned snail mail. The storyline of an ARG< /a> can also be influenced by the actions of the participants.

A brief introduction to Alternative Reality Game (ARG)

The Road Not Taken

TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

ARGs : the game making process in five steps

Denny Unger, the owner and webmaster for www.worldworksgames.com, who also designed the cover of the book This is not a game A Guide to Alternate Reality Gaming,
(Print Edition) By Dave Szulborski, “tries to summarize the process of the game as “steps,” based on his intimate knowledge of the content, presentation methods, and personal effects of the experience.

“I can break the apparent process down in five simple steps:

1) Create an interactive medium that immerses the public in an addictive, tantalizing story but keep the content restricted to certain personality types. Reveal concepts and ideas that generally represent your beliefs.

2) Along the way, feed this portion of the public information which may or may not be true about the story. (Filtration of
the idiots)

3) Those that breach the truths and untruths may pass to the next level of information. Introduce more directed and personal information. Once again reveal accurate and inaccurate information. (Further idiot filtration)

4) As this select group narrows, inject information that more specifically reveals their personal belief systems, ideals, and goals.

5) f the users ideals, beliefs and goals have been properly modified by the process or the user already fits the mold,
those persons are then accepted into the ‘fold’.”

The COP15 game : “The Climate Mystery”

What is The Climate Mystery ?

The original plan was for Axel and me to build a website about global warming and moderate it.

On September 14th, four helpers were supposed to arrive from all over Europe (we call them The Four). For 16 weeks, the idea was that they would use the site to tell YOU what they learned about the climate. The project would be complete when the COP15 Climate Summit (site en français) starts, on December 7th, 2009.

But something has gone horribly wrong.

Now, The Four have disappeared, and somebody has changed our site completely: we can still moderate the website, but we do not seem to have any control over the content that is appearing on it (games, videos, assignments and so on).

Axel needs your help to find out what is happening and what to do about it.
