American Realism under the Bush presidency

« Nous Américains, nous nous engageons dans la politique étrangère parce que nous y sommes obligés, non pas parce que nous le voulons, et c’est une disposition saine –celle d’une république, non pas d’un empire. Il y a eu des moments dans les huit dernières années où nous avons du réaliser des choses nouvelles et difficiles –lesquelles ont parfois mis à l’épreuve la détermination et la patience des Américains. Nos actions n’ont pas toujours été populaires ni même bien comprises.. Mais quelles que soient les divergences que nous avons eues avec eux dans les huit dernières années, nos alliés continuent à souhaiter des Etats-Unis confiants et impliqués, parce qu’il y a peu de problèmes, dans le monde, qui peuvent être réglés sans nous ».

“The survey of 24,717 people is the seventh major study conducted by the Pew Global Attitudes Project since 2002, Bush’s second year in office, when the image of the United States was far more positive, buoyed by world sympathy following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Favorable views of America plummeted the next year with the invasion of Iraq, and in many countries - including close allies like Britain and Germany - opinions declined further in the ensuing years. This year, however, there is a significant uptick in positive views of the United States in 10 of the 21 countries for which comparative data are available.” ¹

“except in countries that are extremely anti-American - those who are paying attention generally believe the next president may well change U.S. foreign policy for the better. In nearly every country surveyed, greater numbers express confidence in presidential candidate Barack Obama than in John McCain.” (…)

France votes Obama

“Obama’s advantage over McCain is overwhelming in the Western European countries surveyed: Fully 84% of the French who have been following the election say they have confidence in Obama to do the right thing regarding world affairs, compared with 33% who say that about McCain.” ²
